Step up to bat for opening local musician venue.

Instead of complaining about Amarillo not having enough to offer the serious musician why not focus that raw negative energy into creating something positive? There's got to be a way to make it happen.

Being a singer-songwriter I share the frustration of feeling like you're
travelin' down the same long one-way-pot-hole-rutted-dead-end road with no
exits!
I've been in that rut for over thirty something years.
Been in bands, recording studios...NASHVILLE, la-la-la-la-la!
Our common ground is the dream of making something of our talents and getting somewhere with our music.
There are those however who are content to play for nothing, have music as a "hobby" or just sit at home singing for their dog.
Amarillo could become another Austin with the right people who have the guts, savvy and capital to jump start this barely breathing music scene back into action.
Gotta start somewhere, right?
First, I suggest a meeting time and place to discuss ideas on how to put all our ducks in a row...(they're easier to shoot that way!)
I personally would like to see someone with clout & bucks who knows the industry backwards and forwards (or just wants to help local talent be discovered) build a musicians sanctuary.
A place with soundproof rooms for different genres: Country, Rock, Blues, etc
where "SERIOUS" musicians can meet certain nights of the week and focus on building connections, co-writing, and sharing ideas.
(There would be a separate room to smoke, share coffee, snacks and conversation.)

The building would also have a sound studio for recording demos to submit
for a minimal fee because most musicians aren't flush.
( The owner of the Sanctuary would take a percentage of every published song created on premises.)
There would be a yearly membership fee, like a songwriters association.

Let's all step up to bat...

1. "I personally would like to see someone with clout & bucks who knows the
industry backwards and forwards (or just wants to help local talent be
discovered) build a musicians sanctuary" -there is no one in amarillo like
this
2.The building would also have a sound studio for recording demos to
submit
for a minimal fee because most musicians aren't flush.
( The owner of
the Sanctuary would take a percentage of every published song created on
premises- what? how many amarillo bands have had any music published except by
themselves? and how many of them made a dime?
3. bands in amarillo hate each
other its some sort of rule randy's started years age.

4. be happy play music
be glad you play music seems there areplenty of gigs out there but can you bring
a crowd? thats the problem no on would bitch if their talent could draw a crowd!

I think they already tried to so this a few years ago. There was a musician
group that met at the Nat and it never did make it.

Just face the
facts:
-The bar owners don't care and just want to make a buck and screw the
bands if they can.
-Like the other guy said, the bands here don't want to work
together and would rather trash the other guys then compliment them.
-The
locals like the cookie cutter music from a jukebox. The bands can't play their
own original music. If they do, then no one will come seem them play.
-Postman
tried to do what you are wanting for the rock scene, but nobody wanted to go
there. And there have been so many others that have come and gone.

I would
love to have a Austin atmosphere and a live music scene, but Amarillo will never
let that happen. Just look at what happened to 6th St. Things started happening
and then they came up with a way to shut it down and run every place out of
there. Then they keep trying to revive Polk St. Well, when I was in high school,
it was the place to hang out. Then they run everyone off. Then there was a
comedy club and Brewsters, and they were run off too. Now they are trying to
make downtown a yuppie district. Bodegas, Burberries, and the Marizon are lame
and will never be like 6th St in Austin. I'm so tired of hearing everyone
compare it to Austin or West End in Dallas.
Whatever!

All the folks that
would have sup...

Its becouse Amarillo bands suck ass theres no band worth going to see. When they
do get good they break up. All musicians hate each other around here. Amarillo's
music scene died with bangers back in the 80's. Amarrilo is a s***ty f***in
place to be a musician. Amarillo will always suck for music. Look at the
concerts we get through here. Most suck. In lubbock they get 20 times the shows
we get. Why? becouse they support music. The people in amarillo ajust lame
ducks. The bands suck and the people suck. Thats it Ive been been playing this
game so long it not even funny. In fact its getting sad.

Like the others already said, the musicians in Amarillo don't want to work
together and have a better time trash talking everyone else. Getting these guys
to sit down and try to work together is just a waste of time. It would never go
anywhere. And then there is the issue of someone with the capital to do it. I
don't think anyone else is stupid enough to invest the cash into something like
this when they would just loose it when it failed again. Just face it, Amarillo
is not another Austin, and there isn't much of a way to change it with the
attitudes of everyone in Amarillo.

It would be nice if you could pull it off. We tried to have a musicians group a
few years ago and it fizzled out and everyone quit participating and it was
gone. As far as opening a place, nobody is willing to take the chance. It costs
to damn must just for the start up. If it didn't make it, then you will loose
big.

The local bands really don't see the need to work together. It's all about the
"what's in it for me" attitude that everyone has around here. If there
is something the group comes up with, they will not support it unless it helps
them out, and don't give a damn about the other bands. It's sad really. I know a
lot of great guys in our little scene and wish this would happen. But I doubt it
will ever get the support it needs to work. And for someone with the money to
set up a venue, it would never work. Ave X is a prime example. We would love to
have an Austin-like scene, but it will never happen here.

Okay looks like maybe there is a little fire in the music scene, which is
inspiring. My band has been out of the scene for a while for lots of reasons but
this past year has been terrible for Steph our bass player, She lost both her
parents and then suffered a heart attack. We're finnaly able to start practicing
again. Mike has also had some problems. I looks like we might be able to finnaly
get out and play again. That said, we always find at least one band to play with
us and even give them a cut of the proceeds. Maybe we can be a small part of
giving this town a shot in the arm. Any bands that want to do a double or triple
billing we're down. We have a fairly large PA for use and don't mind sharing. I
really hope the scene does get better. I hope I/we can help. Maybe Amarillo can
get out of the suck and get back to the music.

D.mn reading all these comments got me down.I need a beer.everyone who wrote a
comment should go to skooters on friday. There is a band Jamming there and if you
like them cool if you dont enjoy the cold beer.Something is better than nothing

Olivia, you have the right idea in mind. Its sad because the musicins in
Amarillo can't get along and work out something. I don't think anyone else is
willing to spend the cold hard cash to see it fail again. Unless someone with
money to burn comes along and puts something up like this, it will never happen.

Amarillo just sucks in general. Get out while you can or you will spend your
life there and wonder what happened when you're old and feebile.

How about Project Amarillo gettin the bars to have a donation bucket,,take the
money, when it becomes available and approach the City of Amarillo to purchase a
building. Project Amarillo could run their myspace page headquarters out of
there and get local bands to play and also maybe bring in outside talent. The
bands could get a larger cut....maybe even get a small studio started.

Ill be brief. Back in the day I was the bassist for RECLUSE. Now Unspoken
Rage<<< cheesy plug. We did a lot of work with Brock and amarillo Nights. It
helped get somewhat obscure musicians on a stage( Most bands only lasted
briefly) It seems that Amarillo Nights and now the incredible Project
Amarillo<<< somewhat buttkissing. hold more wait around this town that you might
realize.ould there be some thing in the works to have a Project Amarillo night
at lets say The Nat to help promote local musicians and give them a chance to
play in front of an audiance. We would be more that happy to play and help set
up a deal such as this. let me know.

wOW ! what a bunch of negative comments. The bottom line is , do you love music
and do you love it enough to play it?
It is not the "other musicians"
in Amarillo that are at fault. The fault is owned by every single one of us.Get
out there and make it happen.Go storm the venues and play for the love of
it.Prove to the other bands that unity is where it's at.Why don't we reach out
to other bands? Because of pride.Lets throw that out the window and get united .
