I see a lot of people adding comments here about how the rock music scene sucks. They bitch and moan about it, but no one is taking the lead and making it happen. If nobody is going to support all these rock concerts, then the badass rock bands are not going to come to Amarillo. When one band goes on tour with another band or bands and they say that they had a low turn out for this show, then the other bands will not book anything here and they pass that info along to even more bands. If you are not going to go see these bands in concert, then don't be bitching when they don't come back and all you get is Cinderella and Warrant. These are old school, big hair bands that can still put on some of the best rock shows around. It really ticks me off when someone bitches about a concert like this and then bitches because we are not getting those $200 ticket concerts here. Do you really think Amarillo will pay $200 or even $100 for a concert ticket? Really, do you?

Everyone in Amarillo throws a fit when they have to pay $35 to see Disturbed. I know so many that said they will not pay that much for a concert. That is why you get stuck with Cinderella. I love these older rock bands and would want to see them come here more often. You should really consider youselves lucky that they will even play here. They still sell out in bigger cities.

I was also very upset when Avenue X locked it's doors because nobody would come out to the concerts and support the rock music scene. That place had the best potential of making it happen for Amarillo again. I remember when Bangers would book some badass bands and the bar was always packed to the rafters. But even they couldn't survive.

I guess what I'm saying is, you better take what you can get and like it. If you don't want to support the meager amount of rock concerts coming to Amarillo, then don't expect it to get any better. I'm about to graduate from WT. Don't expect me to look for a career in this area. I'm a die hard rock fan an would prefer to go somewhere that appreciates the rock bands better. And why are so many out to trash Rock108 over this too. If I was the person in charge of bookng these bands and I heard everyone bitching about it, I would probably tell you to go to hell and stop doing it. They are a radio station, not a record label. You should appreciate what they are doing for the rock music scene in Amarillo. If people completely quit going to the concerts they brought here, then they would stop doing it. Remember they are a corporate station. The boss guys live halfway accross the country. If the market isn't demanding rock, then they would turn 107.9 into another country station or whatever the market demands.
So don't knock it people. Take what you can get and run with it. Go out and show a little support for the rock music scene and make those badass bands notice us. If you show that you will support them, they will come here and rock your ass off!

tammy thompson  - Amarillo music scene does suck, no lie   |08-07-08
Well the Amarillo scene does suck same bands over and over. Look at albuquerque
they get all the good shows even the bar bands kick ass. Amarillo had a good
thing going in the 80s then it just died. Amarillo books all the crap no one
wants to see I do support live music but who wants to see Hinder again the
Todies get real. This town only caters to a certain group of people you know who
you are! Amarillo is lame probably will always be lame wake up its 2008 we need
some good bands to show weather it is bars or the civic center book em lets get
this rock n roll started...
a-town transplant   |06-03-08
i grew up in amarillo and i now live in dallas. i played in bands and was a
part of the "rock scene." so take what i say however you want.

1.
to the person who said,"this is texas damnit. rock doesn't belong
here.": f*** you. close minded people like yourself are why people move
AWAY from amarillo. if you like country, cool. enjoy it to the fullest. but
don't knock other people's music. country will NEVER leave the panhandle, so
don't worry about it. people who listen to rock should be able to catch a
decent show instead of driving 4+ hours just to see a concert.

2. it's a
double edged sword when you support what rock 108 brings to town. if you don't
go, promoters are led to believe there aren't many rock fans in amarillo. at
the same time, going to a disturbed concert sucks. even if someone BOUGHT you a
ticket, it still sucks. a possible way around this is to support the small
bars, clubs and venues around town like MAD. go to every show. spend some
money. and don't f****** complain if there is a cover. in dallas, there is a
cover all the time, and half of the time you have to pay to park ($10-$15
downtown!). if these small venues continually have a packed house, they could
pull in some bigger bands. (ex: the toadies have played a-town a lot!) and if
there is a legitimate "scene" at that level, it could grow to bigger
bands coming t...

I know it looks like Im stiring the pot, but I did a little research on Civic
Center Rental. You can see it here.
http://www.civicamarillo.com/promoters.shtml

I' m waiting on some replys to
e-mails on other rental rates around town too. But from what I see its not
really all that expensive to rent the civic center, when you consider the
facility.

But remember thats coming from me so take it with a grain of salt.

My blog post was not meant to start a fight. Again, I am sorry that you had a
few jerks that just wanted to be asses and pick a fight Jeff. Thank you for the
encouragement to say something here again. Why is it always something like this
that gets under people's skins and they just want to kick another's ass over it.

I only meant to point out that we are lucky to get what we are getting and
if we don't even support the bands we are getting, then we are likely to loose
them too.

This is why we don't get to see all the bigger concerts. If we
cannot sell out the smaller ones, then the bigger ones will avoid us. And we
used to have bigger concerts here, but the civic center was always less than
half full on the rock concerts, so they stopped having them. Everyone whines
about paying more than $20 to see anything. If they started having bigger
concerts again in the civic center, I can assure you they will charge more than
you pay to go to the Midnight Rodeo or the Aztec. It costs a fortune to rent the
coliseum and they add that into the ticket cost.

When Amarillo will not even
support a rock bar, then how do they expect to have decent rock concerts come
here.

And this is Texas, but there are so many badass rock bands from Texas,
what about them? Why do the country only loving jerks have to come here and try
to ruin a post about rock music. Please go start your own blog and leave...
Rock Sucks Reply   |05-16-08
That's what the old geezers told Elvis and The
Beatles..."no future in
rock" and you see how
wrong they turned out to be. Rock will never die

as long as there are young people demanding it,
and the young at heart who grew
up in an era
where it changed history. Country music is stagnant and sounds
the same yesterday as it does today.
Texan   |05-16-08
In regards to the comment about Texas being
"country music
territory"....does that mean all
Texans should only wear western clothes
too if they live here? This comment stereotypes
Texans! :grin
My two cents reply   |05-16-08
Last time I checked, there is no prerequisite(you cowboys may have to look this
word up in the
dictionary) that you have to like country music
to live in
Texas! That is a prejudiced thinking.
All music, including rock, hip hop,
jazz,
country or rap is universal.
Rocker   |05-16-08
Rock music keeps you young! Country music
rocks.....it gives the old hicks
something
to listen to in their rocking chairs! :p
Drowning Pool   |05-16-08
After calling Rock 108 today, they could not give a confirmation of the
rescheduled Drowning Pool
concert at Midnight Rodeo on May 25th. They said

it was up to the band's discretion to schedule
the concert at a later date. On
the band's
myspace page, they are scheduled to play at
Rockford Speedway in
Rockford, Illinois on May 25th and Grand Rapids, Michigan May 24th.
Rock really does suck   |05-14-08
This is Texas dammit. This is country music territory. If you want rock go to
hollywood or Seattle. It doesn't belong here and Amarillo is better off without
it at all.

-my two cents- Trasholatunes
Country sucks   |05-13-08
There will always be a majority of hicks and rednecks in Texas who think rock
sucks. Sure,
anytime you want to feel more depressed, just
listen to country
music! All the same ole poor "pitiful me" lyrics singing about the wife
or hubby leaving your ass, ex's treating you like
shit, dog dying or getting
drunk to cheer you
up! At least rock makes you feel alive with a beat to make
you feel like doing more than two stepping!
Rock Sucks!   |05-13-08
Just face the truth, Rock Music Sucks!
You should just wake up and realize
that country and texas country are eh way of the future. There is no future in
rock. It's a dead music class. So get off your rock fascination and listen to
the real music.
Concert goer   |05-12-08
What do you know...another concert will be held at the beloved Civic Center on
June 27th. WAR, the American funk band of the 70's. Wonder if as many tickets
will sell for this one as they did for Carrie Underwood?
jessica   |05-10-08
you know, i have to say amen to this comment...i love the old bands, but no one
shows up around here anymore and you have to go somwhere like dallas or okc, and
that gets really expensive....people DO need to start showing some support and
if more people would come out then other bands would book....
Concert Lover   |05-09-08
Alot of the big bands, like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Linkin Park, Bon Jovi, Foo
Fighters and Nickelback are playing in bigger venues that hold 50,000 + people ,
like The Ford Center and Cox Convention Center in OKC. Nickelback played in
Amarillo once at the Civic Center, but never came back. The towns with the big
venues can pay more money to the bands, because they know the tickets will sell
out for their shows. Amarillo people
didn't even fill half the seats in the
Civic Center when concerts were held there, so the concerts stopped.
Kaos   |05-09-08
It's Amarillo, so we should be happy with what we get. Yea thats the attitude to
have. "All you get is dirt so enjoy it." Do you really believe that or
are you just triing to make yourself feel better about eating dirt. We could
have things better but their is no crowd. No one wants to pay 35 bucks a ticket
to go see a band in a huge metal building, becouse it sounds terrible in there.
They don't want to go see metal bands in a cowboy bar becouse there is no
moshing in there and they didn't support Avenue X becouse of Grahams. Theres
some truth for ya. Reality is Amarillo's attitude toward music in general. You
bring up Bangers (RIP) but I remember most nights it also being dead in there.
The Paramount Club, was had good crowds but shitty management. Theres been other
places but really who cares, they're closed now. There's some good clubs around
here people just don't go out as much. 3.75 for a gallon of gas, thats what
keeps people home.

As for being down on Rock 108, don't give me the corprate
excuss garbage. Their owned by Cummulus. Cummulus has some really good rock
stations that support local music and even play some local bands on the radio on
a regular weekly show. They also play current rock on their stations. But here
its like the 80's rock station with a little bit of other stuff. Rock 108 helps
keep the Amarillo audiance in the dark from new music.

But hey what d...

avatar I want to thank you for telling it like it is Jentera. You pretty much read my
mind with what you said.

I want to thank you registering and posting this
yourself. I read your email, and thought about posting this. Then I thought it
would sound better coming from the person that said it and not something I
reposted as an article on the site.

You are exactly right. If no one will go
out and support the music, then the bands will just stop coming back. I'm sure
some musicians get on the web, and when they come to sites like mine and see a
bunch of negative comments about them they get a little ticked off about it. I
know I would. And I wouldn't want to play here again.

You are not the only
one that felt a loss when Avenue X closed. It was a great place to hang out and
was a great potential for a bigger rock scene in Amarillo. But as you said, if
the market will not support it, then maybe it should go country. Well it did and
now all of us rock fans suffer for it.

If you look though, there are still a
few rock bars and clubs in Amarillo and they are keeping the scene alive. We
just need to get everyone out there and support them.

And I also want to
thank Rock 108 for all that they do to support the rock scene in Amarillo. If
they were not there bringing in these concerts, I'm not sure if anyone else
would be either. They also get out there and promote the hell out of these ...
